Wilier Road Bikes.

Wilier, like Colnago and Pinarello is part of Italian cycling tradition. Wilier began back in 1906 and has been producing high quality bicycles since that time. Wilier has the equipment to carry out extensive frame testing and use this as part of their day to day manufacturing process. This ensures the high quality of production that we expect from a renowned Italian bicycle manufacturer.

Wilier Cento Uno Superleggera 2011 Road Bike

Was $12,499

Now $11,499

Wilier Cento Uni Superleggera (SL Super Record) Road Bike

Basically meaning Super Light, the new Wilier is way more than just that. It is a bike that attracts attention. Wilier have always made bikes that look out-standing, and the Superleggera is certainly no exception. Park it somewhere and it is likely to draw a crowd of onlookers. If you want a bike that no-one notices, don’t buy a Wilier. One of the features is the beautiful weave on the outer surface. Best way to describe it is that it is like snakeskin, with a deep vibrant sheen. People recognize quality at a glance.
Wilier produce great quality bikes, they are not necessarily the leaders in technology, but they certainly utilize the latest technology to produce some of the best bikes available. This bike is built using an advanced molding process called Lit.

LiT uses highly pressurized silicone bladders to give maximum compression which eliminates imperfections and gives a uniform wall thickness to reduce weight while maintaining maximum strength. This strength is achieved through the use of the highest quality materials, and these latest manufacturing processes. The carbon used in low stress areas is 46 ton high modulus, and 60 ton high modulus in the high stress areas. This high quality carbon has nano-particles of zinc-oxide added to the resin to increase the structural integrity. The whole frame weighs a mere 1220 grams including seat pillar.

Wilier use oversize bottom bracket cups (Campagnolo Ultra Torque) molded into the frame, which allows the use of Campagnolo, Shimano or SRAM cranks with press fit bearings. It is neat and clean looking, and contributes to some of the stiffness in the BB area.

The headset bearing seats are again molded directly into the frame, eliminating the need for additional alloy cups and again saving weight. The frame is a little higher in the head tube area, which allows a slightly less aggressive riding position, which will suit most riders. It is not ideal if you require a long top tube with low handlebar height. But keep in mind this bike has been used to win Tour of Poland, a stage victory in the Tour of Spain and some high level sprints in the Tour De France. It is definitely no slouch, but does it all with a degree of comfort.

The Cento Uno Superleggera really rides well. If you want a quality bike that will perform well in a sprint, has great handling and is reasonably stiff, it has the stats on the board. If you are setting out to race competitively, there are lots of choices out there. This said, most of us require a good all round bike, and cannot afford to have one bike for training, another for racing and another for…………you get the picture.

This bike does everything well. Go and try one, you will be impressed, but it may be worth taking a few dollars along, just in case you cant resist.

Wilier Cento Uno Chorus R3 Road Bike

Now $8,299

Wilier Cento Uno Chorus R3 Road Bike

No other bike has become as coveted a model in such a short time, exceeding the expectations of technical editors and consumers, alike. The Cento1 surprised the bicycle testers of Outside Magazine who, after riding and reviewing close to fifty makes and models, celebrated the Cento1 as “best in show”. The editors of prominent French cycling magazine, Le Cycle, awarded the Cento1 its much coveted “bike of the year” title. Its geometry, light weight, flowing lines and technical features have proven key ingredients to this winning recipe. It is simply without peers.

A new shape and enhanced functionality at the head tube. The Cento1’s head tube is round at the top and squared at the bottom for increased stiffness, working in synthesis with its proprietary fork, the crown of which has been reinforced and likewise squared for increased stiffness. That stiffness enhances steerability, as well as stability when climbing or sprinting out of the saddle.

The Cento1 boasts an integrated seatpost (or seatmast) to be used in conjunction with specially designed seatclamps. A key feature of this system is the internal diameter of the seatmast, making it possible for a qualified mechanic to retro-fit a conventional 31.6mm diameter seatpost by cutting down the seatmast to a more traditional height. Below the top tube, the seat tube takes on a progressively larger diameter for maximum stiffness at the bottom bracket.

A new feature of the Cento1 is its integrated bottom bracket design - a Wilier Triestina exclusive. It is a completely universal and “open” design, compatible with all major crank and bottom bracket systems currently on the market. The bottom bracket shell has been enlarged by 39%, increasing lateral stiffness for more efficient power transfer.

Another exclusive new feature is the asymmetry of the rear triangle, with the drive side stays differing from the non-drive side stays based on the forces applied to a frame during power transfer, and to better accommodate the movement of the chain in all situations.

For the Cento1, Wilier have implemented Mitsubishi’s “46 ton” carbon composite, the world’s strongest, most resilient carbon fibre. As the name indicates, this carbon material can withstand forces equal to 46 tons per square millimetre. Monocoque dropout construction: the rear dropouts are an integrated part of the rear triangle. Even the interface points (or tips) of the dropouts, traditionally in aluminium, are part of the monocoque carbon structure. The wall thickness of tubes in this area of the frame have been slightly augmented for increased strength and durability, while preserving the lightweight characteristics of the rear triangle. Tube angles have also been “softened” to dampen road vibrations.

This bike is fitted with the latest Campagnolo Chorus 11 speed with carbon cranks. The wheels are Fulcrum Racing 3's.

Wilier Gran Turismo Athena R3 Road Bike

Price was $5,999

Now $5,499

Wilier Gran Turismo Athena R3 Road Bike

Given that few of us can afford to have a different bike for each type of terrain, a bike that can excel in a wide variety of riding conditions is probably ideal for you. This is why the Wilier Gran Turismo is worth serious consideration. By definition Gran Turismo is for luxury touring, and this is exactly where this bike excels.

Most touring bikes look….., well they look distinctly like touring bikes, the Gran Turismo looks anything but. It is a great looking bike. I have to admit, I am tempted to buy one just because of it’s appearance, but there is no need to admit to anything so foolish, because it is actually an ideal bike for most of us.

While the Cento Uno is regularly praised as being one of the best race bikes available. It is beyond many riders’ budget constraints. Also most of you don’t wish to race (professionally anyway) and are probably more likely to go out for a 2-3 hour ride with your mates. A bike that performs well regardless of where you go then delivers you back feeling great, even after hours in the saddle, is a real gem. There are many of us who are no longer in perfect condition, and feeling comfortable at the end of a ride probably is far more important than the slight performance advantage of a pure race bike.

Actually when it comes down to performance, this bike would out-accelerate many race bikes. Wilier designers are not constrained by the limitations of out-sourced manufacturing capabilities. They have their own monocoque molding process to fully utilize their innovative designs. Using the highest quality carbon fibre from two trusted suppliers Toray and Mitsubishi, Wilier hand build these frames using Toray’s T700SC and Mitsubishi,s MR60H and 46 ton fibre. Using a blend of these fibres, Wilier’s engineers are able produce a frame that delivers excellent performance, with maximum comfort at a cost that is well below the Cento Uno. In fact most of us would not be able to tell the performance difference, while you will appreciate the reduced fatigue after a long grueling ride.

An unusual feature that contributes to the comfort of this bike is the asymmetrical rear stays. Naturally the forces applied to the rear stays during acceleration and climbing vary left and right. Wilier have designed stays to neutralize the variation in these forces, and deliver improved performance while increasing the comfort. Makes sense doesn’t it? It probably won’t be long before most manufacturers do this.

An unusual feature is the Razor Edge Design, whereby the frame uses more aggressively shaped tubing, which further improves performance and is very aesthetically pleasing. It is a nice change from the usual round tubing, and reinforces the praise of Italian styling. Wilier have paid a great deal of attention to the head tube and the bottom bracket area, in order to achieve unparalleled torsional stiffness. This of course is a major factor in achieving the incredibly high level of performance of this bike. And the paint work. Well Wilier are known for their works of art, and this bike is definitely no exception. It looks outstanding!

Wilier Izoard XP Campagnolo Athena

Normally $4,699

Clearance Price $4,199

With this Izoard XP, the group set is Campagnolo Athena, which incorporates many of the features found in the Super Record at a considerably more affordable price. It is an 11 speed, with a 11-23 rear gear and standard cranks 53/39. The whole group-set weighs less than 2.5 kgs and looks great, it has polished aluminium cranks, brakes and derailleurs. The wheelset is Campagnolo Neutron, a beautiful wheel-set, light and reliable (weigh only 1550 gms for the set). The carbon monocoque frame comes in 6 sizes and 2 colours as illustrated. The bike rides a treat, the frame is built using exclusively Toray carbon, a combination of T700 and M30J. This delivers a frame that performs brilliantly, albiet a little heavier than a T800 frame, but the ride quality is the great, it performs as well as you would expect a $5,000-$6,000 bike to ride. It is a few grams heavier, due to slightly more material being used to obtain the specified rigidity, but on the road it would be hard to pick. If you factor in value for money, in my opinion this bike is unbeatable.

Wilier Izoard XP Centaur

Wilier Izoard XP 2012 Road Bike

As you would expect from an Italian bike designed to be ridden under a wide variety of conditions, the Izoard has an impressive ability to combine speed and agility, yet provide a degree of comfort that less competitive riders will really appreciate. This has been achieved through a combination of frame lay-up, together with curved rear stays, designed to soak up much of the road impact. While it may not be the ideal choice if you want an armchair ride, if you are looking for a bike that you can ride for hours, without coming home feeling destroyed, yet still be competitive when your mates get a gleam in their eye, this is a great choice.

The 8kg weight helps here. The bike is not so light, that it feels twitchy and unstable, yet it is not heavy or sluggish. Wilier seem to have come up with a handling combination that impresses everyone. The top bar is shorter than most, but combined with a longer stem, it gives a nice balance. It certainly works very well, especially on longer rides. The steering responds well, and is always predictable, but responds well to firm control. The confidence it will give you will assist to produce quicker cornering times.

There is a Shimano Ultegra version at a few hundred less for those that prefer, but this bike is fitted with the renowned Campagnolo Centaur group-set with Campagnolo Scirocco G3 wheels. Centaur works really well. The changes are precise with positive levers and good, progressive braking. Campagnolo always produces long lasting equipment, but you will be pleased with how well it changes. Sure, it is a totally different feel to the Ultegra, but it is always reliable and never seems quite as fussy as the Ultegra when the gear adjustment is not quite right.

The Campagnolo Scirocco G3 wheels add to the great feel of this bike. The wheels have no noticeable flex, and again while there are lighter wheels out there, they add to this brilliant package, at a mere fraction of what you would expect to pay. Scirocco’s weigh around 1800grams, and are a very robust wheel set, due to Campagnolo’s G3 system. Normally a rear wheel , is never as strong as the front wheel because of the offset required for the cassette. Simply stated, with the G3 system, the rear wheel has twice as many spokes on the cassette side as the off-side to equalize the forces on the rim, and prevent buckling. The wheels are then fitted with standard high quality industrial bearings, which reduce friction and are inexpensive to replace. While the Scirocco’s are a good practical choice, there is also the side benefit that they look and feel superb.

Wilier Izoard XP Ultegra SL 6700

The Izoard XP is built with a full carbon monocoque frame, using exclusively Toray carbon, a combination of T700 and M30J. It is a few grams heavier, due to slightly more material being used to obtain the specified rigidity, but on the road it would be hard to pick. If you factor in value for money, in my opinion this bike is unbeatable. Equipped with an Ultegra SL 6700 group set, (with the hidden brake cables) it is a proven performer. This group shifts reliably, is light, and durable. It's easy to see the similarities to Dura-Ace, and to ride feels little different.

Most of us feel comforted by the familiarity of traditional experiences, such as getting together with family and friends at Christmas time. Comfort in the knowledge that we know what to expect, know that we will have an enjoyable experience.

Tradition counts for a lot with Italian bike manufacturers like Wilier who have been producing some of the worlds finest bicycles since 1906.

This appreciation of tradition and respect for the experiences garnered over time sees Wilier bikes widely accepted not only for their outstanding appearance but also for the traditional traits of value for money, reliability and the assurance that the product will perform entirely as expected.

The Wilier Lavaredo is a perfect example of tradition being respected while at the same time incorporating modern features and materials.

At first glance, the observers reaction is likely to be one akin to “gee, what a classy looking bike”, which is entirely accurate, and may even lead one to speculate upon the price of such a fine looking machine. The Lavaredo “punches above its weight” though and would surprise many by its amazingly low price. Admittedly it is "On Sale", but it is quite refreshing to purchase a sale item without experiencing any trade offs. No downside, just a great bike for not a lot of money.

Sometimes “Italian flair” can go overboard and the result can be a little overpowering, but the Lavaredo has such clean classic lines that traditionalists will find it very appealing, even before they step on for a ride. The combination of an elegant frame design, quality paint finish, and the use of matching components throughout ensures a pleasing result.
Bikes are for riding though and it is on the road that the Lavaredo really shines, performing as would be expected from a bike with a pedigree dating back over 100 years.
The Lavaredo frame is crafted from lightweight triple butted aluminium tubing and features internal 1 1/8” headset bearings for a clean appearance but more importantly for a rock solid front end free of any possibility of steering abnormalities such as speed wobbles. Reassuring when descending at speed and confidence inspiring when diving into a corner, chasing victory at your local Criterium. The race inspired frame geometry of the Lavaredo shares the credit for this positive, sure footed handling and is one of the reasons the bike is so much fun to ride..................not only does it look fast but it wants to go fast too. As standard fitment, the Lavaredo is equipped with carbon fibre front forks which assists in lessening the overall weight and in aiding ride comfort by minimising the transfer of road vibration to the handlebars. These forks are made specifically for the integrated headset, with the fork crown blending perfectly with the frames head tube for a very clean junction.

Continuing the theme of tradition, Wilier have chosen components from fellow Italian manufacturer Campagnolo to fit-out the Lavaredo, along with wheels from Fulcrum (which are made by Campagnolo) and handlebars, headstem and seat post from component manufacturer Ritchey.

Campagnolo has long been the component choice of many manufacturers and riders, with its legendary reliability and ease of use being much sought after attributes. In fact reliability, simplicity of design and ease of use are 3 of the core reasons many prefer Campagnolo. The logical ergonomics of the gear shift mechanism (called Ergopower) is so simple to use and particularly so for those with smaller hands or whose hands may not be as strong as some others. Upshifting is just a push of an easy to reach shift lever and downshifting is even easier with the push of a button. The 10 speed (20 gears in total) drive train includes a Campagnolo Ultra Torque crankset with external bottom bracket bearings which as an assembly is lighter and stiffer than older models. Braking is also from Campagnolo with dual pivot brake calipers providing confident and safe stopping under any riding conditions, even if you do get caught out in the rain.

The Fulcrum wheels will also prove to be reliable and hard wearing as they feature sealed bearing hubs to minimise rolling resistance and reduce the frequency and simplify any maintenance requirements. Stainless steel spokes are used for their strength and non corrosive properties and tie the sealed bearing hub to the anodised aluminium alloy rim which has machined sides for perfectly parallel braking surfaces, ensuring optimum stopping every time. Combined with the dual pivot brakes the wheels actually round out the Lavaredo package that looks great, goes great and stops great.

The final component items to complete the bike are the 120psi high pressure Ultra Speed tyres, bidon and bidon cage, Selle-Italia saddle and the cork handle bar tape. None of them show stoppers individually, but all of them essential items of a quality which will enhance the ride. All you need is a pair of pedals, your shoes and helmet (and knicks and jersey of course) and you can be off down the road, recalling riding experiences of years past or relying on the heritage of the Laverado to conjur up images of lithe riders on the roads of the Veneto region of Italy, as you experience your own piece of tradition.
