Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels. The Racing 3 provides most of the features of the Racing 1, with some small modifications to give substantial cost savings. For example, the rim used on the Racing 3 has an upper section with no spoke holes, allowing you to save weight as no rim tape is required, and preparing you for the inevitable future of road tire technology: UST tubeless clinchers. The lack of spoke holes also leads to a more torsionally stiff, vertically comfortable ride. The main difference between the Racing3 and Racing 1 rim, in fact, is that the Racing 3 rim receives only a single facing treatment, meaning that it weighs just a few grams heavier. The two spokes opposed to the rim joint are slightly oversized to counterbalance the mass of the joint, resulting in a dynamically balanced wheel. The Racing 3 uses 2mm bladed spokes, giving it an aerodynamic advantage over standard butted spokes. The front wheel has 16 spokes in a radial pattern, and the rear has 21 spokes with paired drive side rear wheel spoke identical in design to the Racing 1. The Racing3 hubs are oversized and they feature both aluminium bodies and axles. The adjustable bearings have a silky feel. When it comes to hubs, the main difference between the Racing 3 and Racing 1 is the free-hub body - the Racing 1 uses alloy, the Racing 3 uses steel. The aluminium hubs feature sealed precision bearings for smooth running. The Racing 3 has the same dynamic balancing as the Racing 1. You get a machined rim surface between each spoke (to save weight), but the rim section between the two spokes opposite of the weld joint isn't machined. This extra mass counterbalances the joint for superb stability at speed. The Racing 3 is available in either Shimano or Campagnolo drive-trains. It has a weight of 1635g. The price is $1050

Campagnolo Zonda wheels. Thanks to their aggressive aesthetics and weighing only 1,610 grams, Zonda™ wheels arrive at the starting line as indisputable competition stars. They are the first to propose the differentiated rim wheel with a height of 26 mm for the front rim and 30 for the rear. Tests run at our laboratories have shown that this is the solution that currently provides the best results in terms of performance and reliability. This solution in fact gives a light and very steer-able front wheel and a stiff rear wheel that maximizes the transmission of the rider’s leg power. Both rims have been lightened between the zones in which the spokes are inserted, i.e. the section of the rim where diameters can be reduced without diminishing solidity. Special milling in the section opposite the joint ensures dynamic balance during rotation of the wheel and prevents a “jump” being felt at high speeds. Both rims have a top bridge that is free of holes. This means weight saving because rim tape does not need to be fitted and gives the wheel greater torsional stiffness and vertical elasticity. The ultra aero stainless-steel butted spokes are arranged radially on the front wheel and the rear wheel has G3™ spoking. The rear rim has asymmetrical holes to improve wheel dish. The hubs are oversize with aluminium axles and self-aligning bearings. The flange of the rear right-hand hub is oversize to increase torsional stiffness. Zonda™ hubs also use the Campagnolo freewheel body and pawl carrier housed in a single part for maximum lightness. Zonda™ 2006 wheels are fitted with levers in cold-forged aluminium with two pivots for more balanced clamping. Available in Black and Silver colour versions. The price is $1065

Campagnolo Neutron wheels are the choice for those who want to be winners uphill. They are light and responsive and are decisive when changing rhythm or accelerating. This year’s clincher tire version comes with a rim that has been lightened by a special process that reduces the weight by about 30 g, but maintains the wheel’s technical properties. The special section of the rim absorbs jolts from an uneven road surface and provides ideal comfort during long-distance competitions. The HPW oversize hubs of the Record class and the differentiated ‘aero’ spoke provide ultralinear geometry that ensures that loads are distributed along the entire length of the spoke without concentrating on a single point as in the case of traditional spoking. The rear differential asymmetrical rim improves wheel dish and further increases wheel solidity. Designed for climbers. The price is $1165 Mavic Ksryium SL2 Wheel Set. A light wheel-set with Maxtal rims (Maxtal is 30% stronger than 6106 aluminium) and Zicral spokes (lightweight aluminium). Lightweight hubs contribute to the mere 1500gm weight, extremely good at this price level. The price is $1450

Mavic Ksryium ES Wheel Set With Wheel Bags. Many of you likely recall the Mavic Helium -- first seen in 1996, it spawned the pre-built wheelset revolution. Folks quit hand-building wheels component-by-component, and instead embraced the fact that companies like Mavic could supply them with rock solid ready-made wheel-sets. The price is $1590

Campagnolo Eurus™ wheels, weighing only 1,550 grams, are the ideal choice for those who want a multi-purpose wheel which gives the utmost both on the toughest climbs and at high speed on the flat. Eurus™ feature a differential profile, i.e. a 26-mm extrusion profile for the front rim and a 30-mm extrusion profile for the rear rim. Tests run at our laboratories have shown that this is the solution that currently provides the best results in terms of performance and reliability: a light and very steer-able front wheel and a stiff and responsive rear wheel. The rims have been lightened in toroidal form between the spoke insertion zones, i.e. in the section of the rim where diameters can be reduced without lessening the solidity of the structure. The dynamic balance of the wheel is assured by special milling in the section opposite the joint. This balances the weight of the joint during rotation of the wheel. Both rims have a top bridge that is free of holes. This is a significant weight saving, thanks to the lack of rim tape, and gives the wheel greater torsional stiffness and greater vertical elasticity. The Ultra Aero™ aluminium spokes are butted and the front wheel has radial spoking whereas the back wheel has G3™ spoking. The rear rim has asymmetrical holes to obtain a better wheel dish. The hubs are in oversize aluminium with aluminium axles and self-aligning bearings. The rear hub has a larger flange to increase torsional stiffness and therefore wheel performance during acceleration and bursts of speed on the pedals. Eurus™ wheels use the freewheel body and pawl carrier housed in a single aluminium part for maximum lightness. The levers in cold-forged aluminium with two pivots grant a perfect and more balanced clamping. Eurus™ wheels are available in Black and Silver versions. The price is $1,665

Fulcrum Racing 1 wheels. Fulcrum has a very close association with Campagnolo. This relationship is one reason why in its first year of existence Fulcrum is the official wheel-set of three of Europe's biggest pro teams. And just like Campagnolo, Fulcrum wheels combine exacting technology with Italian style. With the Racing 1 wheel-set you not only get great durability, but also style and light-weight. The Racing 1 rim is aluminium and has a 26mm depth, giving it an aerodynamic edge in comparison to a set of Campy Neutrons or hand-built Open Pro wheels, but without making it so deep that you experience unbearable turbulence in crosswinds. The rim is lightened by Fulcrum's exclusive triple facing treatment. And the upper section of the rim has no spoke holes, saving weight by foregoing a rim tape, and preparing you for the inevitable future of road tire technology: UST tubeless clinchers. The lack of spoke holes also leads to a more torsionally stiff, vertically comfortable ride. The Racing1 front wheel has 16 spokes front, 21 spokes rear. Not unlike the Zircal spokes of a set of Mavic Ksyrium SL's, the Racing1 spokes are made from lightweight aluminium. And at first glance, their thick cross-section makes them look an awful lot like Mavic's Zircal spokes. But upon closer examination you'll see how the Racing1 spokes have a variable cross section. They're thin at the hub flange, but they progressively widen as they get closer to the rim. This minimizes bike instability in windy conditions, while maximizing the aerodynamic benefits of bladed spokes. And furthering to goal of stability is the Racing1's dynamic balancing to give you precise handling at any speed. While you'll get a machined rim surface between each spoke (to save weight), the rim section between the two spokes opposite of the weld joint isn't machined. This touch of extra mass counterbalances the joint for superb stability. Given that the Racing 1 wheel-set is intended to be just that: a racing wheel-set, the rear wheel was built to maximize stiffness under high torque. You get paired spokes on the drive side of the rear wheel to resist torsional windup. An oversized drive side hub flange further stiffens things up. The Racing 1 is available in both tubular and clincher. It comes in Silver or Black. It weighs in at 1517g, making it competitive from a weight standpoint with any other top-notch clincher offering out there, and firmly placing it in the top echelon of best options for an all-purpose wheel-set. The price is $1665.

Mavic Cosmic Carbon Wheel Set. Weighing in at 1765gm, the rims are made of Maxtal body with bi-directional carbon flanges. The spokes are flat black stainless steel and the hubs have an integrated free-wheel with remove-able and adjustable cartridge bearings. The price is $2260
