Giant Cross City 2 Flat Bar Road Bike. Price was $1099, now just $899. |
With Shimano Tiagra 27 gears and with ratios aimed at the faster riding the Cross City 2 is capable of, it is a bike that will suit the needs of touring and commuter cyclists as well as weekend fitness riders. Overall it is a fast, relatively lightweight bike. It has been designed to cater for a wide variety of riding surfaces, so it is a little heavier than a normal road bike, but much more versatile (and lots of fun).
At the respectable price of $1099, the Cross City 2 has often been the choice for those wanting a great quality bike at a price not too far away from the $1000, a threshold for many purchasers. At this level you get a bike that has a lighter frame than the Cross City 3 or 4, with carbon forks to absorb road vibrations and improve the ride (they are also a little lighter). The performance and ride quality are further improved with the addition of higher quality wheels, that are lighter and stronger. Lighter wheels give a noticeable performance increase, so it makes it a little easier to pedal along.
The saddle is particularly comfortable, a welcome addition to those use to some road bikes. It is mounted on a suspension pillar, which is adjustable to suit the riders weight and riding preferences. The suspension pillar removes the shock when you inadvertently encounter a massive pothole or negotiate cobblestones at the side of the road. Of course the bike also has lightweight handlebars and stem, again to keep the weight down to a minimum.
The frame has provision for mudguards and a carrier in case they are needed, and there are plenty of mounting points for lights. If desired larger tyres can be fitted, to tackle gravel tracks or the like, but the standard tyres will handle pretty much any surface you normally encounter. Overall this is a very versatile bike, ideal for city use. |

2012 Giant Cross City 3 Flat Bar Road Bike. Price was $799, but now only $699! |
The Giant Cross City 3 has a lightweight aluminium frame and cromoly forks and is equipped with eyelets for mudguards and pannier racks. The Cross City 3 is extremely versatile bike. Actually most people buy these simply because they are light, easy to pedal and ride so smoothly. There is suspension in the seat pillar... just for some extra comfort, and it has a really comfortable saddle. The bike still has Shimano Sora gears (great quality) and Tektro "V" brakes for reliable braking. The double-wall alloy rims prevent rim damage, and are resistant to buckles. These rims are stronger than single wall rims and are ideal for suburban use. And all this for under $800! Come and test ride one today. |
Giant Cross City 3 Flat Bar Road Bike. |
This model has an aluminium Aluxx frame with Cromoly tapered forks. It is light and fast (read easy to push). Plus there is suspension in the seat pillar... just for some extra comfort.
Overall the bike is ideal for most suburban riding, it is fast enough for road use, can handle rough surfaces or even gravel tracks (although a change to wider tyres may be required if this is regular) and is comfortable enough for leisurely cruising. While the Cross City 1 and 2 have a lighter frame, this bike is still very light, and is likely to really impress if you do not want to spend the extra to get a Cross City 2.

2012 XDS RX-580 Price was $869, but now just $699! |
Have a look at this bike. It looks great, has a light frame, comfortable saddle, and is equipped with a Shimano Sora 27 speed gear system. It is an absolute bargain!
As a fast commuting bike, or simply for everyday recreational riding, this is surpriisingly versatile. While it has a lightweight aluminium frame to keep the weight down, the forks are carbon fibre, to improve rider comfort by dampening out road vibration, a contributing factor in rider fatigue. The carbon fibre forks improve rider comfort without adding additional weight.
Because it has a Shimano Sora triple crank at the front combined with normal road gearing, it is capable of climbing the steepest of inclines, yet it can reach quite high speeds if you are up to it.
The Shimano R500 wheels are reasonably robust, and certainly much better than you would normally see on a bike below $1,000, much less $700. Combined with the CST 700x28 tyres, the bike rolls well and is quite puncture resistant, certainly a great benefit if you just want to go out for a bit of execise, and dont fancy spending time repairing flat tyres.
The top tube is long enough to place the rider in an efficient riding position, ideal for climbing or moving along at a decent pace, less suitable if you only wish to go out for a leisurely cruise. But if you plan to ride to work or go out for a bit of execise it is perfect. I have a flat bar road bike, and have grown to really like it. Sure it isn't as fast as a normal road bike, but in traffic it inspires confidence. It is so easily handled especially when motorists or pedestrians do unpredictable actions, and you can ride with peace of mind.
A great bike, you will love it. |

The GT Traffic range of bikes targets those who find themselves wanting a bike suited to city riding, but with the strength, durability and comfort of something a little more versatile. Giant Cross City 4 Flat Bar Road Bike. |
The Cross City 4 is the 2012 equivalent to the CRX 4 from past years which was Giants entry level flat bar road bike and probably because of its price one of the biggest sellers in this segment of the market. The perfect bike for someone who just wants a no-fuss flat bar road bike that gets you from point A to point B relatively fast, without much effort, while still being nice to ride!
|
2010 GT Traffic 2.0 Flat Bar Road Bike Was $949, but now just $599! |
Now only available in Small sizes.
Designed for city use, the Traffic 2.0 features low maintenance internal hub gears. The hub is a Shimano Nexus 8 speed, which has a wide enough range for almost any city riding unless you happen to find a massive suburban incline. One of the advantages of an internal hub, is the ability to change gears when you are stationary so if you happen to stop at a set of lights and realise you are stuck in a gear too hard to start off again, simply select your desired gear and wait for the green! No problem.
The frame is quite light, sure anyone after a really lightweight bike will not buy an internal hub bike, but given the heavier hub, the bike is still light enough and easy to pedal. It is fast in traffic, and the relaitively upright riding position suits most people. The double wall rims are again quite light, and overall the bike rolls well and is easy to push.
While discussing the wheels, as I said the rims are double walled, but also eyeletted, so they are not only light, but also very strong. The tyres fitted are Schwalbe Roadcruisers, which have inbuilt puncture protection, a very handy feature for city riding or an area that is prone to "Bindy eyes". The tyres also have reflective sidewalls, which can be a great feature when riding at night.
If all the above is not enough to impress, the bike also comes with a good quality saddle, that most riders find comfortable. The handlebars, stem and seat pillar are all high quality and bear the GT brand. The bike is also fitted with a couple of anti theft devices, to prevent the theft of the saddle or wheels. And.... it has an inbuilt taillamp, that fits neatly under the saddle, so neatly in fact, that you hardly notice it is there.
So there we have it a bike that is light, easy to use, safe to park unattended and requires little maintenance. Tempting?? |
2011 GT Tachyon 4.0 Flat Bar Road Bike Price was $779, now just $599! |
TYPE OF FRAME GT Tachyon compact geometry aluminum frame with hydroformed TT and DT, Internal cable routing, forged drop-outs with removable derailluer hanger and all braze ons |
XDS RX-280 Price was $699, but now just $599! |
At $599 this bike is a perfect bike for most people wanting a good quality, but relatively low cost flat bar road bike.
XDS is relatively unknown in Australia, but they produce high quality bikes. XDS usually produce bikes that other companies sell under their own name, and some well known names at that.
This bike rides well. It has a lightweight aluminium frame, with Shimano road gearing and a quality Tektro "V" brake system. It has a Shimano triple crank, so that you have a really wide gear range, ideal for any hill you need to tackle. The wide ratios also mean that it has a high top speed if you need it. It is unusual to be able to get a bike with Shimano road cranks, derailleurs and cassette at this price level. It means the bike changes gear smoothly and efficiently, yet can achieve a top speed around 50kmh if you are up to it. Even the crank bearing assembly is a sealed Shimano unit, there is simply no junk on the bike.
The wheels have double wall rims and a reasonable quality 700 x 28 tyre, ideal for roads and bike paths, not too suitable for gravel.
The riding position as with most flat bar road bikes is fairly aggressive, not at all suitable if you wish to sit bolt upright, but if you are happy to lean slightly forward into a more efficient riding position, this bike is great. |
2011 Mongoose Novara Elite Price was $825, now just $525 |
COLOR Satin Silver |
2010 GT Traffic 3.0 Flat Bar Road Bike Price was $649, but now just $499! |
Want a bike that is relatively light, easy to push and comfortable? The GT Traffic 3 which is aptly named a city bike will likely fit the bill. Designed for paved and other good quality surfaces, the Traffic 3 is fast and light, ideal for getting to work or just having fun. The Traffic comes complete with a set of anti theft skewers for the wheels and seatpost which should help prevent theft when the bike is parked. The seat also has an integrated flashing taillight, a very neat little unit.
The aluminium frame is quite light, and because the bike is not fitted with suspension the overall weight is kept at a minimum. This means that the bike feels light and rolls along well. The Traffic is ideal for bike paths or any other relatively smooth surface where suspension is not required, and can make a bike heavier and less efficent to ride. The GT Traffic is fitted with a 24 speed gear system, which is aimed for the recreational market (light action, simple to operate). The tyres are puncture resistant, and keep rolling resistance low, so that the bike rolls easily. The handlebars and stem are lightweight and high quality. Overall this is not only a great looking bike, but also a pleasure to ride, and inexpensive. |
2010 GT Traffic 4.0 Flat Bar Road Bike Was $499, but now just $399 |
The GT Traffic 4 is a perfect entry level bike for most people to explore cycling, and help decide whether it is for them.
Many people come to us unsure of whether they will continue cycling if they buy a bike, and subsequently are unsure whether to buy a good bike, or just a "cheapie". It is a "catch 22" type situation. If you buy a poor quality bike, then cycling is unlikely to be appealing and the bike is likely to be used a few times, then relegated to the shed, where it gradually deteriorates until it is finally given away. If you buy a good bike, at least the chances are much greater that the whole idea will be a success, as the bike will be a pleasure to ride, but you still have to find the the time and inclination..........
The Gt Traffic is a bike that has really broad appeal, yet is quite inexpensive. It has been well thought out for the average recreational cyclist. The money has been spent on things that will make the bike pleasant to use, reliable and comfortable. There is nothing fancy, just a good quality bike that is easy to pedal, and reasonably comfortable.
Sure there are lots of bikes nicer to ride, but most cost hundreds (if not thousands) of $$ more. In my opinion this bike strikes a really great balance, as they have created inexpensively, a bike that is light, has a comfortable, relatively upright riding position (without feeling cramped) and is easy to pedal. The bike has a good quality frame, made of aluminium to keep the weight down, with inexpensive steel forks fitted to take racks, mudguards, childs seat or any other accessory you desire. |
