It's not every year that a brand new model bike becomes available. Not just a new year model, but a completely new, never ever been made before type new. The Giant Defy Composite 1 is new like this. A model never previously made. Following the success of the TCR Composite bikes in 2011, Giant realised that the benefits those buyers enjoyed could be appreciated by an even greater number of riders if they introduced the same technology into the endurance category Defy range. The success, both in the number sold and their appreciation by the riders who bought the TCR's indicated that this all-new Composite level frame, which shares many of the features of the Advanced and Advanced SL models further up the range including hand lay up of the carbon fibre fabric, will be even more successful in the Defy geometry format. Every Defy Composite adds road smoothing comfort and racing performance to provide the perfect frame for many serious recreational and racing road cyclists. With rider comfort as a priority, the Defy frame geometry allows for a more upright position than is available on the purely competition bikes. With a longer wheelbase, more relaxed angles, shorter top tube and a longer head tube giving a more relaxed rider position resulting in less back and neck fatique, easier handling and a less harsh ride, benefits which are appreciated by the long distance Gran Fondo rider and the casual weekend rider alike. The Composite material further reduces rider fatigue thanks to its ability to absorb road vibration. |

Giant Defy Advanced 2 Road Bike 2011. |
The Giant Defy Advanced 2 is more suited to long recreational or training rides than racing. The bike is altered to give preference to rider comfort, rather than outright performance, and for many of us coming home from a long ride still feeling good, is more valuable than beating your mate on that sprint, although both would be good. The frame sits the rider slightly more upright, reducing any strain on your back or neck, while still placing you in an aerodynamic riding position. While this may not appeal to everyone, if you notice any starin in these areas after a long ride, this bike will be of great benefit. The frame, saddle, handlebars, cranks, gear ratios and tyres are all biased slightly towards rider comfort, with the result that the bike is noticeably more comfortable. Maybe not a 20 year olds 1st choice, but at 30-70 it is at the very least extremely tempting. |

|
What a great bike for under $1500! Currency fluctuations don't always work in our favour, but with a bike of this quality now costing less that what we would have paid for the frame and fork a few years ago, who's complaining? With the fantastic ALUXX SL frame, carbon forks, Shimano 105 20 speed gears, brakes and crankset, the Defy 1 is an ideal bike for someone getting into road riding or who is perhaps tired of putting up with the discomfort of their old road bike. Being a light-weight bike with the more upright riding position offered by the Defy geometry it is well suited to those who ride regularly, be it as a daily commuter, fitness rider or as a light tourer. The Shimano Tiagra components are known for their ease of use and reliability and will last the average recreational rider for many years. While it may not be suitable for serious racing with the more upright rider position, it is more than capable of handling regular rides for those setting out on a fitness regime, or heading out to explore the open roads. Comparing a Defy to the TCR it is clear that the Defy is designed more for a rider who perhaps has no real desire to race, but is still interested in a fast, light bike to get fit, or simply for recreation. With rider comfort as a priority, the frame geometry allows for a more upright riding position than is available on purely competition bikes. This more relaxed position results in less back and neck fatique, easier handling and a less harsh ride, benefiting the regular long distance rider and the casual sunday rider alike. We will all have heard of the saying "Built for comfort, not for speed", well this doesn't exactly apply to the Defy range. They are certainly comfortable, but are also as swift as most bikes on the market. if you are intending to pin on a race number, then have a look at something from the TCR range from Giant. Giant ALUXX SL alloy frames. Compare a modern alloy frame such as the 2010 Defy from Giant with any older frame and you will instantly notice the difference in tubing shapes. The old frame will have round frame tubes, while the latest frames from Giant are anything but, with ovalisation, tapering and gussetting all being incorporated in the shape of the tubing. Two other differences are less noticeable from a visible inspection, lighter weight and increased strength, however they are benefits derived primarily from the Fluid Forming which is the technique used to control the tubing shapes. With a raw material 30% stiffer than traditional 6061 aluminium, and fluid forming technology, the 2010 Defy frames are the strongest, lightest aluminium frames Giant have ever produced! One feature that won't be of use to everyone, but which will be a huge benefit to those who do need it, is the incorporation of pannier rack mounts on the seat stays and dropouts. So the Defy can be used as a useful commuter or semi tourer simply by bolting on a rack. |

Giant Defy Alliance 1 Road Bike 2010 |
Giant Defy Alliance 1 Road Bike 2010 TheDefy Alliance 1 had a completely redesigned frame for 2010. It incorporates features that are de rigueur on the performance TCR range. These being the OverDrive steerer tube making the steering more responsive and precise and the PowerCore bottom bracket. This feature incorporates the outboard bearings in a press-fit design so the frame encases these. This equates into a stiffer pedalling platform which results in a more responsive, explosive performance. The Alliance name calls attention to Giant's excellent ability to combine carbon and aluminium which gives you the benefits of the comfort which carbon offers as well as the residual stiffness of aluminium through the bottom half of the frame. The geometry of this frame gives one a more relaxed riding position which is derived from a longer wheelbase increasing the stability, a slacker steering angle which slows the steering down a touch and reduces the distance from the seat to the handlebars slightly increasing the riders height on the bike reducing stress across the shoulders, back and legs. This design of the Defy Alliance 0 makes it perfect for those riders getting back into riding, maybe not quite as supple as one once was or those wanting to churn out the k's without the fatigue that can be associated with more aggressive frame designs. The bike is fitted with the ever reliable Tiagra group set from Shimano combined with the Sora series compact cranks giving you great range for the hills etc., Giant's own Connect SL range of components including a carbon seat post, Fi'zi:k saddle and the excellent Mavic Aksium wheel set. The tyres are 25mm Vittorias which give some extra comfort too! This year Giant have gone that little bit further too with little touches such as colour-coded anodized derailleur hangers, saddle trims and top-cap on the head stem which finish this bike off quite nicely. |

NEW! Latest 2012 ModelGiant Defy 3 Road Bike 2012 Price $999 |
The 2012 Giant Defy 3 utilizes a Sora 50/40/30 triple ring, making this Giant extremely beginner friendly. The bike offers a wide range of gears (27) with its nine-speed Shimano Sora rear derailleur. The new frame with a tapered fork steerer and large bottom-bracket shell allow for bigger tubes all around and a stiffer, more responsive ride for performance-minded cyclists. A carbon-composite fork with an aluminum steerer helps dampen road vibrations and fine-tune the bike's feel. But the shorter top tube and more relaxed geometry also deliver the kind of comfortable and upright ride not found on those race-oriented bikes. I know appearance relates to personal preference, but I think the Defy 3 looks outstanding, and is excellent value for money. |
