Giant Talon 0 29er 2012

Price $1,199

Twenty Niners are becoming a real force in mountain biking, with their ride qualities becoming a factor in a greater number of models being made available each year. But before we get too involved with the 2012 Giant Talon 0 29er, let's answer one very frequently asked question.

What is a 29er?
At the most basic level, a “29er” refers to a mountain bike with a larger wheel diameter than a “traditional or regular” mountain bike. The “29” is actually a bit of a misnomer though, as it refers to the approximate 29" diameter of the entire wheel (with a tyre mounted), whereas a regular mtb is approximately 26” in diameter. To be more specific about rim size, the 29er uses rims of the exact diameter of a road bike or hybrid rim, usually referred to as “700c.” This larger wheel diameter reduces rolling resistance by some 10% while simultaneously reducing hub bearing resistance and wear and tyre wear also by at least 10%. Stability when rolling over obstacles is enhanced both while climbing and descending enhancing your feeling of safety and well being. Following a longer ride most riders will feel less fatiqued due to the improved comfort. Grip and cornering balance is increased and traction, especially when climbing on loose surfaces is also improved enabling more saddle time before you feel the need to get off and walk to the summit. It also seems that pinch flats are a less common occurence when using a 29er.

Not all is gold at the end of the 29er rainbow though as a 29er is heavier by 300-400g when compared to a comparably equipped 26" bike. This extra weight decreases acceleration rates by around 2%, and the extra mass will have a similar effect on braking. Bike control in technical situations is a little less nimble and wheelies or front end lifts over ruts etc is more difficult, but wheel stiffness and strength is improved and a greater range of tyres and tubes are available for the more common 26" wheel.

For most people though the benefits and rideability of a 29er far outweigh these small negative points. Many International riders competing in World Cup and World Championship events choose to ride 29ers because of the momentum that the larger wheels provide, but the benefits of being able to roll over many obstacles without having to lift the front of the bike makes for faster riding over rougher terrain even by less skilled riders.

The 2012 Giant Talon 0 is available in a great range of sizes from 16" upward, so only very short riders won't be able to benefit from the 29er experience. For everyone else the Talon is a real option and taller riders will finally feel like they have a bike that is proportion to their build. The Talon 0's frame is crafted from the super light ALUXX aluminium tubing which has been hydro formed providing strengthening shapes and gussets for increased frame strength and reduced weight. A great basis from which to start and to which a nice range of commensurate components, such as Avid hydraulic brakes, SRAM X5 drive train, Sun Tour lock out forks and matching front wheel with a 15mm through axle have been fitted. The result is a really great bike that is fast and fun to ride and a bike that will be encouraging to the rider and a little forgiving where another bike may not be.

2012 Giant Talon 0

Giant Talon 0 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Talon 0 Mountain Bike. 2012

You can expect more "bang for your buck". More "puddin' for your pound". More "fun your your florin" and definately more "dazzle for your dollar" with the 2012 Giant Talon 0. Amazingly bikes just seem to get better and better each year, either upgrading in several areas for a similar price, or perhaps retaining much of the same features, but reducing in price. The value for money equation is so far in the purchasers favour when compared to previous years that it often leads to the situation where even those with just an inkling they may want/need a new bike end up getting one. The prices are just too good to refuse.

The 2012 Talon 0 is a bike like this. For just over $1,000 you get an amazing array of components and features, that simply wasn't possible a few years ago. Beginning with the super light, hydro-formed aluminium alloy frame with integrated gusseting which is not only light but also extremely strong, Giant have built a great hard tail Mountain Bike suitable for weekend enduro's or daily trail bashing.

The Rock Shox cross country forks come with the handy remote pop-loc which means you are able to "turn off" the suspension via a small handlebar mounted lever for those times when fork travel isn't needed or may be dangerous. So convenient having this at your finger tips. The Talon 0 comes with a full range of the upmarket Giant Connect components and has a Shimano 27 speed drive train, complimented by hydraulic disc brakes, Maxxis Crossmark tyres, lock on grips and Giant S-XC 2 wheels.

The Talon bikes have always been great to ride and the new Talon 0 with its great range of parts will be the best one yet.

2012 Giant Talon 1

Price is $899

Giant Talon 1 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Talon 1 Mountain Bike. 2012

Just about everyone that rides a bike realises it is doing you some good. The physicality of it obviously gets your muscles working, raises your heart rate and expands your lungs, maybe even draws sweat if you try a bit harder. All good physical benefits from doing some exercise, but riding a bike has other benefits.

Sure there is the environment. Clean and green and all that, but be a little selfish about it and realise that the exhilaration experienced and the mind clearing achieved when riding is as good a feeling mentaly as the exrecise is physically. Euphoria is perhaps too strong a term (unless you're having a really great ride) but the sense of wellbing and the clear headedness may let your mind wander, to consider the world and how great things are, especially when having a ride. Your thoughts may even wander to obscure topics such as foreign exchange rates...................especially if you're riding a brand new bike that is better than your old one but was cheaper to buy. How does that happen you wonder?

Many of us go through our day to day lives without any thought of currency exchange rates or what bearing their movement has on us directly. Prices go up and down, well not down so often, but in the past 2 years with the Australian dollar getting stronger and stronger the prices of bikes have gradually come down, so far that even pretty decent quality bikes are quite cheap.

Mid range bikes like the Talon 1 and their buyers are the real beneficiaries of this favorable currency situation as it is this price range of bike that has a really noticeable price reduction. It was at around this model of bike just a couple of years ago that you would expect to start to get into a really good bike. Something you could race on or give some pretty heavy use. This hasn't changed, what has changed is the price you need to pay. Just a few years ago you would have been looking at $1200 or so and now this more serious style of bike is just $899.

Quite a sophisticated group of components including Avid hydraulic disc brakes, Roack Shox suspension forks, 27 speed Shimano gears, and Giant accessories are fitted to a super light aluminium frame. The overall effect is a bike that will provide hours of fun for many years, as everything is of a good standard and can be expected to last with a minimum of fuss.

2010 Giant Alias.

Price was $1,279, now just $899!2010 Giant Alias

The Giant Alias represents the absolute best value package that you will find in the market. Would you like a mountain bike that has heaps of the best features, like hydraulic disc brakes, suspension that you can lock-out, gears that change properly and a frame that you can stand over even when you get caught trying to go up a hill too steep or down a track too difficult to negotiate. While it is far from the best available, it has the features most people would like on an off-road mountain bike, but often can't afford. The low frame design not only looks great, but allows errors of magnitude without too much embarrassment. It really does allow you to attempt going into terrain that would be extremely difficult on a conventional design frame (straight top tube). Remember those times you didn't quite manage to climb that cliff and ended up left figuring out how to get back down. The hydraulic disc brakes are a pleasure to use, and really stop very effectively using only one or two fingers, leaving the rest to hang on to the bars, maybe even change gears at the same time. The Deore gears and cranks help to ensure that it will change gears accurately, even when under extreme conditions (like coming around that blind corner and finding you are immediately faced with a steep incline and just have to change down or get off).

Normally a mountain bike of this standard is around $1300 to $1500, so the current price allows you to get a lot more enjoyment for your money while this special lasts. If you are wanting to try some of the more challenging tracks when off-road riding, or would simply like a nicer bike to ride, this is a great bike. Come in and test ride one before they all go.

2011 Giant Talon 2.

Was $879, but now just $799!2011 Giant Talon 2 sil

When looking at the Talon 2 compared to the next one up - the Talon 1 - there aren't too many differences! The model is the equivalent of the Yukon, but the features have been upgraded. On the Talon 2, we've got an ALUXX SL Sport formed alloy frame with integrated headset (same as Talon 1), the forks are Rockshox Dart 2 100mm travel with PopLoc hydraulic lock out, Shimano Deore/Alivio/Altus Drivetrain, Shimano hydraulic brakes, the SDG saddle and Hutchinson tyres.
This is the cheapest bike you'll find in this range that has PopLoc. The benefit of PopLoc is that you can access the hydraulic lockout on the suspension from the handlebars. As you can imagine, reaching down near the wheels to lockout the suspension while you're riding is not particularly practical or safe, so PopLoc was developed to enable you to lock it out from the handlebars. So if you want a mountain bike with all the features, for under $1000, this is definitely one to look at!

2010 Giant Yukon.

Price was $1,199, now just $699!2010 Giant Yukon

This bike is the first in Giant’s line-up that has a true off road frame (designed to be tough, yet light with additional clearance, for those difficult trails). The Giant Yukon has hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano Deore running gear at a price that is manageable for most. It comes with Rockshox Dart front suspension, which includes a lock out system to turn off the suspension when not required. The Rockshox provide quite good suspension for off-road use without paying thousands of dollars. The Shimano components are a combination of Deore, Alivio and Altus, for reliable gear changing and braking. It has tough double wall rims fitted on Shimano disc brake hubs to ensure that you have a strong, reliable wheel set.

Giant Talon 2 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Talon 2 2012 Mountain BIke

The Giant Talon 2 is an upgrade from the Boulder 1, (which for many years was Giant's most popular model), and is an ideal bike for anyone who needs the rugged reliability of a proper off roader but who still may use the bike as a means of transport a few days a week. The Talon range is made from a higher grade alumuminium, ALUXX SL (stands for Super Light), this superior alloy offers 18% more tensile strength than Giant's other proprietary alloy, ALUXX, used in the Boulder range. It is also used as the basis for a range of decent quality parts have been assembled to ensure years of trouble free riding. With a substantial equipment upgrade from the Boulder, the Talon is ideal as a recreational level bike, ideal for bike paths, rough tracks and more strenuous off-road adventures. There are other models better suited to regular forays into the wilderness and others better suited to the daily commute to work, but if your budget, (or partner) won't come at a fleet of bikes, each ideal for a particular purpose, then the universality of the Talon just may be the answer you need. A great all-rounder!

2010 Giant Filter 3 -

(Bike only available in S,XL)

Marked down from $949, now just $5992010 Giant Filter 3 black green

The Filter 3 is a super-tough off-road bike that can survive anything you can.  An ultra-strong hard tail bike put together with tough, superb quality componentry, it will respond as if its an extension of your body. Whether you're riding over rocks, tree roots or gutters, this bike can take it. While no bike is completely indestructible, this bike comes close.

2011 Giant Talon 3.

Price is $5592011 Giant Talon 3 blk

Last year we had the Strata as the mid-level front suspension mountain bike. But now it's the Talon 3. The forks have been upgraded from last year's. We now have RST Gila Pro forks with 100mm travel and hydraulic lockout. Although it's not quite as practical as bikes with PopLoc (adjustable from the handlebars), it's definitely an asset to the bike. On those changing terrains where one minute your going down a steep hill and the next you're on a steep ascent, the hydraulic lockout will help you use your energy efficiently on the downhills and save you energy on the uphills. Just speak to one of our staff about how to use it if you're not sure. The frame has also changed slightly to a ALUXX alloy frame with an integrated headset. There is a Shimano Alivio/Altus drivetrain and Shimano cable disc brakes. There's a SDG saddle and Giant Sport alloy componentry. Plus the new paintwork looks wicked!

2012 Giant Boulder 1

Price is $549

Giant Boulder 1 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Boulder 1 2012

Looking through the range of Giant mountain bikes, the Boulder 1 really stands out as it is the first model available with disc brakes. The Boulder 1 is a little more upmarket in the suspension department too, with lighter weight, stronger forks than the lower Boulder models. These two features of superior brakes and suspension are substantial benefits for any riders who will ride a little more often or in adverse conditions or for the heavier rider.

These features combined with great quality Shimano 24 speed Altus gear system, Giant wheels and tyres, comfortable saddle and the great alloy Boulder frame result in a fantastic package not too far over $500.

Over the years, the Giant Boulder has earned a reputation as a solid performer, reliable in the long term, easy to use and handle and pretty good value for money. These favourable traits are even more evident with the 2012 model benefitting from a strong Australian dollar allowing Giant to supply a top notch package for a mid range price.

2010 Giant Strata.

Price was $679, now just $499!2010 Giant Strata blue

The Strata is an upgrade from the Boulder, which for many years has been Giant's most popular model. The gears and suspension are improved, but it has the same frame. All the money has gone into the equipment upgrade. It is ideal as a recreation level bike, ideal for bike paths, rough tracks and an occasional off-road adventure. More than that and you will need to consider spending a little (or a lot) more, so that you get into a drop framed or lightweight off-road bike.

2011 Giant Boulder 1.

Price is just $499!2011 Giant Boulder 1

The Boulder 1 is basically the equivalent of last year's Boulder model. Mostly the bike is the same, except for the Forks which have been changed over from the InSync Edge fork to a RST Gila Pro fork. Plus it has a sweet new look just to top it off! The features are pretty much the same; A lightweight ALUXX alloy frame, Shimano Altus drivetrain and cable disc brakes, Shimano hubs and rims and a SDG saddle! The front suspension makes those bumps and dips that much easier to handle (and so that you don't get thrown over the handlebars at a particularly nasty bump), the suspension with absorb most of the impact before it gets to you.
The Boulder is in the range of cheaper mountain bikes, but I can assure you, you get more than what you pay for with this one!

2012 Giant Boulder 2

Price is $479

Giant Boulder 2 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Boulder 2 2012

For lots of our customers, buying a bike purely based on price is how they prefer to make a selection. Many people have no interest in the technicalities, such as which model deraileurs are fitted or how much travel the suspension forks have. For many people it is enough to have decided upon a price and to be happy with the bike that this brings. Many customers have a new bike budget of $500 and are usually quite happily surprised with a bike like the Boulder 2 which is an excellent quality mountain bike that could be used everyday for any of the reasons people cycle, such as for fun, fitness, transport, commuting and as a rough and tough off roader on the weekends. The Boulder 2 is not a full blown "serious" mountain bike, but then it isn't $1000 either. It is simply a godd quality, easy riding, robust bike that should be expected to last for many years.

The 2012 Giant Boulder 2 features an alloy frame, which carries Giants standard life time guarantee and comes in both female and male options and in a range of sizes to suit adults of all heights.

The Boulder 2 has a quality 24 speed Shimano gear system, which has a range suitable for all forms of riding and all fitness levels. These gears are very easy to use and have a visual indicator to let the rider just where he or she is up to. The 2012 Giants come with very comfortable saddles and hand grips and the Boulder 2 also has front suspension forks to aid comfort and control on rougher ground. The forks are adjustable so the rider can select just how soft or firm they prefer the "feel" of the bike. The Boulder 2 is fitted with an alloy Giant wheelset which have a cassette rear hub, quick release axles, stainless stell spokes and Giant tyres.

A good buy for less than $500, and one that will make our "buy by price" customers very happy.

2012 Giant Boulder 3

Price is $429

Giant Boulder 3 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Boulder 3 2012

The second bike in the Giant mountain bike range for 2012, the Boulder 3 is the first model to have suspension forks. Although still a recreational level mountain bike the Giant Boulder 3 is designed for and can be used for mildly rough off road riding as well as being entirely suitable for use "just as a normal bike".

The Boulder range of bikes all have alloy frames and many alloy components, including the wheels to keep the weight to a minimum making riding just that bit easier and more enjoyable. The frame has pannier rack mounts just in case you want to bolt on a rack to carry gear to work each day, books to school or a basket full of groceries back home from the shops. Water bottle mounts are also part of the frame so you can carry a drink with you on longer rides or warm days.

The Giant Boulder 3 has RST Capa T suspension forks, which are adjustable should you wish to experiment with different settings and ride feel. Most people never touch the adjuster but it is there if you want to have a play. The Boulder 3 has 21 speed Shimano gearing which is easy to use thanks to the SIS system, which indicates that the gears are indexed, meaning that they click into each gear as you move the lever. The lever also incorporates a visual display so you can check what gear you are in which can be handy if you are trying to decide whether this hill is really steep or you are really unfit. Very easy to use, even for a novice and something to be relished rather than feared.

Being a recreational mountain bike, the Boulder 3 has quite a relaxed seating position, so that the rider can sit reasonably upright without too much forward leaning which can bring some discomfort to the lower back with some bikes.

For the 2012 range, Giant have continued their introduction of Giant branded product, with Giant wheels and Giant tyres featuring along with other colour coded Giant accessories. A nice bike for not too much money and available in both female and male frames.

2011 Giant Boulder 2.

Price just $429!2011 Giant Boulder 2 red

The Boulder 2 (essentially the same as last year's Rock), even though it's in the lower price bracket of the Giant mountain bikes available, it's definitely a popular model.... And I can see why! At the cheap price of just $479, you're still getting a great-quality mountain bike, for under $500!
This year's model is essentially the same as last year's Rock, the only real difference being that this year Giant has changed over from InSync forks to RST Gila forks. With 80mm of travel in the forks, this bike is not really one that you would take on crazy jumping tracks or off-road racing, but it sure does to the job brilliantly for those of us who are a little less adventurous on our bikes. The suspension will help you with handling when you're riding and absorb most of the shock from those little bumps that can be pretty nasty on certain body parts...
If you're looking for a no-fuss, do-the-job-and-do-it-well kind of a mountain bike for under $500, the Boulder 2 is definitely recommended!

2012 Giant Boulder 4

Giant Boulder 4 2012 Mountain Bike

Giant Boulder 4 2012

The Giant Boulder 4 over the past couple of years has proven to be "just what the doctor ordered" for many bike buyers.

We often have people come into the store uncertain as to what type of bike they really need, or even what type of use they are likely to ask of it. They know that they need a bike. It doesn't really need suspension for they will probably spend most of their time on bike paths or the streets. It needs to have easy to use gears because they have had bad experiences in the past or they don't feel that comfortable with 21 gears. It needs to be pretty cheap, because they are uncertain just how much use it will actually get despite all good intentions. But it needs to be decent quality because they don't want to have to replace it. These are all common requests and fortunately we have a bike that fits the bill.

The Giant Boulder 4 is a mountain bike, but without suspension forks, which keeps the overall weight down a bit as well as the price. The weight is also aided by the alloy frame and wheels, which help to ensure a more enjoyable ride thanks to the ease that this lighter weight brings to pedalling. The Boulder does have 21 easy to use gears, which are "indexed" which means that the lever clicks into gear so that the rider, even if inexperienced can change gears confidently. There is no need for trepidation as it really is easy to do, and the wide gear range means that even new riders who aren't yet "bike fit" can get up most hills with ease.

Likewise, the braking is super easy thanks to the efficient "V" brakes which are so efficient and require much less hand pressure than older bikes you may have used and is a real confidence booster for a lot of riders. Confidence can also be gained from the stability offered by the 26" wheels and the widish tyre which means the bike has a good solid grip on the ground and is unlikely to slip and slide on gravel etc.

The Boulder 4 comes in models for both women and men and in a range of sizes suitable from an extra small for a tallish 10 year old to ride to school right up to an extra large suitable for a retired AFL player who's looking for some low impact exercise.

With full warranty and 12 months free servicing, the Boulder 4 is a great alternative to buying something second hand, and probably exactly the right bike for many recreational riders who need the transport or want the exercise without having to make a huge investment.

2011 Giant Boulder 4.

Now just $329!2011 Giant Boulder 4

The Boulder 4 is the cheapest 2011 model adult mountain bike that you'll find in our shop. It's a very basic frame similar to the Upland. There's no suspension on this one, but as with the others, it has the alloy frame making it lightweight, Shimano Tourney drivetrain, Alloy "V" brakes and a comfort saddle.
There's probably three categories of people that this bike is particularly suited to: 1) an older child who no longer fits on a kids bike, but is still growing fast so you know they won't last years on the one bike, 2) someone who doesn't ride very often, and when you do ride, you just want something really simple and reliable, or 3) someone just looking for a cheap mountain bike that does the trick!
Now, keep in mind that for an extra $50, you get suspension in the front forks which will add to the handling and comfort in riding (Boulder 3), but we'll let you decide!
