Bike Lights.
Bicycle lights as with most products come in such a range, that it can be difficult to choose the correct light for you. Bike lights are generally LED lights, halogen lights are becoming less popular. Powerful re-chargeable bike lights and helmet mounted bike lights, suitable for off-road use, or simply commuting around the suburbs are often as powerful as car headlamps. Mountain bike lights are generally helmet mounted. Niterider and Cygolite are generally the most popular brands. There is a brief bike light review with each product.

Cygo Mitycross 400 Bike Light On special for only $229, Save $100
|
While brand name products such as Cygolite may seem more expensive, the higher quality componentry used guarantees that the product will perform as expected. The leads are durable, and don't short out after a while, the lamp lasts for years without failing, the light intensity remains constant with long run times, and obviously the battery does not lose its capacity. Things we all tend to take for granted, we often expect all manufacturers to make the best product possible, but get caught out with when a manufacturer takes shortcuts to get the price down. The quality of this unit, in fact all Cygolites is so high, that when we checked, with over hundreds of units sold, there were only 1/2 of one percent (yes, 0.5%) return rate with any sort of fault, and these were repaired or replaced under warranty anyway! It is now top of the line in the Mitycross series, the MityCross 400 is the second generation of these bike lights featuring more powerful LED's for a truly powerful yet compact system. The unit weighs a mere 240 gms, yet will run at full power for 3.5 hours, or if you are riding on the road, and do not really require that level of brightness, it will run for a massive 17 hours (but you may be worn out by then). The 400 lumen output is way more than road users would normally require, but off-road......... different story, especially down high speed single tracks. If you look at the light comparison, you will be able to compare the actual light output. Last year it was only 350 lumen, this light is 400 lumen. The unit is tiny, but very robust (and looks neat). The leads are heavy duty and much higherquality than many of the competition. The leads are an area that is prone to problems as the light gets older, if they are inadequate. Also a point not often publicized is that the light intensity remains constant. Have you ever noticed on some units, that it starts off really bright, but seems to lose intensity after running for a while. Well, that is quite common in the cheaper or even earlier high priced units. Not so with Cygolites. The Mitycross 400 is a brilliant bike light (no pun intended) and is offered here for a similar price to the budget priced units. By the way, check on our light comparison, against the lesser quality, but higher rated units - the 400 lumen output may be better than you expect. |
