Bike Lights.
Bicycle lights as with most products come in such a range, that it can be difficult to choose the correct light for you. Bike lights are generally LED lights, halogen lights are becoming less popular. Powerful re-chargeable bike lights and helmet mounted bike lights, suitable for off-road use, or simply commuting around the suburbs are often as powerful as car headlamps. Mountain bike lights are generally helmet mounted. Niterider and Cygolite are generally the most popular brands. There is a brief bike light review with each product.
Below is a selection sorted by type then price.

Cygo Mitycross 400 Bike Light Only $299
|
While brand name products such as Cygolite may seem more expensive, the higher quality componentry used guarantees that the product will perform as expected. The leads are durable, and don't short out after a while, the lamp lasts for years without failing, the light intensity remains constant with long run times, and obviously the battery does not lose its capacity. Things we all tend to take for granted, we often expect all manufacturers to make the best product possible, but get caught out with when a manufacturer takes shortcuts to get the price down. The quality of this unit, in fact all Cygolites is so high, that when we checked, with over hundreds of units sold, there were only 1/2 of one percent (yes, 0.5%) return rate with any sort of fault, and these were repaired or replaced under warranty anyway! It is now top of the line in the Mitycross series, the MityCross 400 is the second generation of these bike lights featuring more powerful LED's for a truly powerful yet compact system. The unit weighs a mere 240 gms, yet will run at full power for 3.5 hours, or if you are riding on the road, and do not really require that level of brightness, it will run for a massive 17 hours (but you may be worn out by then). The 400 lumen output is way more than road users would normally require, but off-road......... different story, especially down high speed single tracks. If you look at the light comparison, you will be able to compare the actual light output. Last year it was only 350 lumen, this light is 400 lumen. The unit is tiny, but very robust (and looks neat). The leads are heavy duty and much higherquality than many of the competition. The leads are an area that is prone to problems as the light gets older, if they are inadequate. Also a point not often publicized is that the light intensity remains constant. Have you ever noticed on some units, that it starts off really bright, but seems to lose intensity after running for a while. Well, that is quite common in the cheaper or even earlier high priced units. Not so with Cygolites. The Mitycross 400 is a brilliant bike light (no pun intended) and is offered here for a similar price to the budget priced units. By the way, check on our light comparison, against the lesser quality, but higher rated units - the 400 lumen output may be better than you expect.

Moon X Power 1000 Head Light Price is $249 |
The oval cutaway head shroud gives Moon’s new LED light a Sci-Fi look and keeps the three separate metal LED mounts inside cool. The rubber watch strap-style mount keeps it secure and wobble-free on the bars. It’s light enough to use the included helmet mount and extension, although that needs tight fastening to avoid shaky vision on rougher trails. The squared-off solid shell battery can be squeezed onto most frames and Kevlar effect cables have decent connectors.
Output is mainly focused down the middle for impressive reach and distance detail for its price. Four different settings and a battery indicator in the main switch help manage the slightly short battery. Weight and price are very reasonable for the overall light levels.
Features: 3 Super Bright LED's with 1000 lumen combined output.

Planet Bike Blaze 2watt Head Light Price was $99.95, but now just $89! |
This is an incredible light for such a compact unit. The output is quite sufficient to see with (around 100 lumens). In fact it compares well with rechargeable units that are over double the price, and it weighs so little. It has a flash or static mode, with high or low beam (to conserve batteries) and has good side vision, so you can not only see, but also be seen from a variety of angles. The unit is not expensive to run, regardless of the enormous output. It will run for 5 hours on high beam, 12 hours on low beam or 18 hourson flash mode. All this on 2 AA batteries. The mounting bracket adjusts to oversize handlebars and is quick to fit and easy to adjust.

Planet Bike Blaze 1watt Head Light Price was $85, but now just $79! |
The Blaze 1 watt has an enormous light output for its size. It is a small unit that is powered by 2 AA batteries. The output is adequate to see where you are going at lower speeds around the suburban streets. It certainly would not be adequate for bush bashing, but if recreational riding, or commuting is the requirement then this is a great light. It enables you to see the rocks, bottles, and occasional branch that can cause you grief if unseen. If used on flash mode, the light will run for around 20 hours on 2 aa batteries. If you need to run it on high beam, it will cut that down to about 7 hours, or 14 on low beam. The battery cost seems minimal for the light output, compared to most other compact lights on the market.Great light, it's certainly worth a look.

RavX Lumi X5 Head Light & Tail Light Price is $39. |
This headlight is reputed to be the most powerful 45 lumen headlight in the world. This may or may not be the case, but it is certainly a compact, powerful mini headlight. And it is rechargeable using a USB port. It does not require batteries as it comes with a USB cradle which allows the recharging of the internal battery via any computer USB port.
This front light has 5 ultra bright white LEDs, with 3 Modes (excl. off), Being so compact it mounts almost anywhere. The lamp can be seen from 500m, so it is quite powerful, although certainly not the best available. The battery life is 1 - 5 hrs depending on the setting, but obviously in traffic you would want to have it set on high, so it would be 1-2 hours. The light is designed to be seen with, it was never intended to light your way, but at 45 lumens, it will get you home if the main light goes flat.
The mounting strap is silicon, so it is quick and easy to remove and refit in a variety of positions. And it is a neat looking little unit.
Specifications: HIgh intensity rechargeable mini light

Serfas TL-200 Tail Light Price $38 |
This seems one of the best available. The unit has a full watt of power, so the light output is outstanding. For me the safety aspect of a great tail light cannot be under stated. You can see from our test it is incredibly bright. I would feel much more comfortable in traffic knowing I could be so easily seen. It is really neat looking light, with a simple functional mounting bracket. It can be fitted to a rear stay, seat pillar or rear rack. It is quick and easy to fit. Serfas products have always proven to be reliable and high quality to date, so I would expect nothing less of this product. The battery consumption on such a high output light is of course higher, but with a life of around 80 hours on flashing mode, I would be more than happy to pay a couple of dollars extra every few months for this level of safety.

RavX Flash Super Red Tail Light Price is $36 |
As every cyclist and especially commuters know, our greatest danger when cycling is from motor vehicles. This danger soars as the light diminishes and even more so when poor visibility due to rain also enters the equation. Good lighting is a relatively cheap weapon to help ward off these potentially harmful machines. Of course it makes sense to be serious about trying to protect ourselves by choosing serious lights. Lights like the Rav X Super Red rear bike light which is a very bright tail light that has a super bright LED supported by another 2 regular LED's. Mounts easily to clothing or tto the bike via a solid seat post mounting bracket. This is one of those seriously bright light you don't want to look directly at. You'll see red for hours if you do!

RavX Super Disc Tail Light Price is $32 |
The Rav X Super Disc is neat, inexpensive, yet powerful. It really stacks up well compared to the bulk of the competition. The light uses a half watt Ultra bright LED, so it has heaps of power (visibility to 1km). The light is ideal for a road bike as it fits very neatly behind the seat post, and looks like it meant to be part of the bike (unlike a few of the competition). The bracket allows it to be fitted in seconds and is adjustable fully through 360 degrees. Don't be put off by the inexpensive price, as it's not a cheap light, it's a good light at a cheap price.
With a battery life of 100 hours and the inexpensive price, this bike light is a real winner.

Tioga Dual Eyes Tail Light Price is $32 |
The Tioga Dual Eyes and the Serfas TL-200 seem to be two of the best tail lights available. The difference between the two is in the bracket, the light is exactly the same (same manufacturer). The Tioga has a worm drive bracket, the Serfas a rubber strap. Both work well but the Serfas is better if you wish to mount it on the rear stay. The Tioga has a quick release mechanism for fast removal and fitting (ideal if you take it off when you leave the bike). The light unit has a full watt of power, so the light output is outstanding. For me the safety aspect of a great tail light cannot be under stated. You can see from our test it is incredibly bright. I would feel much more comfortable in traffic knowing I could be so easily seen.
The Tioga Dual Eyes is a really neat looking light, with a simple functional mounting bracket. It can be fitted to a rear stay, seat pillar or rear rack. It is quick and easy to fit. Tioga products have a lifetime guarantee, if it is faulty (manufacturing fault, not because you dropped it) they will replace it. You would expect the running cost of such a high output light to be higher, but with a battery life of around 80 hours on flashing mode, I would be more than happy to pay the couple of dollars extra every few months for this level of safety.

RavX Lumi X2V Head Light & Tail Light Price is $24 |
For the advocates of tiny (and great looking) mini lights, there is now another contender. It is a compact little light with quite a healthy light output when you consider its size. Ideal for anyone who needs to remove the lights when not in use.
The RAVX Lumi X2 Lights can be mounted just about anywhere. They each have 2 LEDs housed in a colorful body with a simple mounting strap. They come with either red or white lights for front or rear use, and feature steady or flashing modes. To mount you simply wrap the strap around the handlebar or seatpost. The 2 LEDs give the Lumi X2’s plenty of power and they are available in seven different colors. Batteries are included and last about 100 hours.
