Giant Roam XR1 (Small only) Price is $1299 |
Light and fast are the 2 most common requirements when it comes to most peoples bike selection criteria. Comfort and price are also quite high up as influencing factors. Colour is important for some, but the absolute first decision to be made when buying a bike is the answer to the question, "what style of bike best suits the type of riding I envisage doing?"
There are very definately "horses for courses". Bike styles that are very focused toward one type of riding or another and often just the name is sufficient to point you in the right direction and your decision is made subconsciously without you actually being aware that you had made it. A Road Bike for instance is pretty self explanatory, or if you call it a racer that too pretty well sums up what the bike is intended for. Likewise, the term, Mountain Bike should need no explanation, but just as off road 4 wheel drive vehicles can be driven on road so can their 2 wheeled equivalent. The name Hybrid is a little less specific, it is a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. Not as robust as a mountain bike but useable off road and not as light or fast as a road bike, but a good bike for riding on the road. A very popular type of bike for many people who ride on a variety of surfaces, but just a bit slow and sedate for anyone who enjoys some speed and a bike they can ride a bit aggressively.
Hybrid bikes have been a staple of the bike market for many years now, evolving into the fairly staid, comfortable style of bike like the Giant Cypress. Fantastic for many people who's comfort is the main buying criteria. But some people want something a bit sportier, but still with 700c wheels and widish tyres, a bike that is pretty fast but is rugged enough to handle some trails and paths. A cross between a Cypress style hybrid and a Cross City style flat bar road bike. But one that doesn't look like grandpa's bike.
Giant have recognised the growing interest in this style of bike and for the 2012 range have introduced the Roam range of bikes which will fill this void very nicely. The Roam is a bike that may well spend most of its time on road as a commuting bike, but will prove to be far more comfortable than the low posture positioning required from a road bike and yet not all that much slower. Road bikes are great for speed and distance, but if you like to ride on trails and dirt once in a while, the narrow tyres of a road bike aren't that suitable. Whereas the Roam has the perfect mix of stability, rugged durability, sporty riding position and can even be a bit of fun if you consider that it isn't all that much different from a 29er mountain bike. Just with narrower tyres.
The Roam XR 1 is the upper model in the Roam range of bikes, and is a bike that will single handedly satisfy the needs of many mountain bike or road bike riders who wished they had something a bit more versatile for some of their riding. It has a fluid formed, double butted, super light aluminium frame which is a great base on which Giant have assembled a range of high end Shimano components in a 3 x 10 format giving the lucky rider 30 gears to choose from. Enough both in number and range to get you up the steepest hill or keep up with guys on road bikes. The light weight suspension forks are adjustable and feature a lock out option so that it can be turned off when the going isn't that rough. With sealed bearing hubs, stainless steel spokes, alloy rims and hydraulic disc brakes, the Roam XR 1 just may be the bike that sees you put away the road bike and mountain bike, only to be brought out on those days when a specialist is required.
For 90% of the time this "hybrid hybrid" just may be the most perfectly versatile bike you've ridden. |

Giant Seek 1 2012 Price was $1099, now $999! |
In Melbourne there are bike paths running in almost every direction. If you wish to explore, you can travel round most of Melbourne without need of roads.
The Giant Seek has been developed as an ideal bike for commuting, exploring bike paths and as a general run-around. There seems to be a rapidly developing interest in lightweight, fast commuters and the Seek answers this demand admirably. But it is much more than this, while it is of course very practical, it also looks so good. Whenever you ride it anywhere it seems to have that ability to draw admiring glances. It is probably a waste to confine it to the bike paths, maybe you could park it outside the coffee shop and take in a little of that admiration.
The Seek 1 has a lightweight, top-of-the range frame and offers it at a price that your hip-pocket will smile at! With the same light weight ALUXX SL aluminium frame used in the Cross City 1 and 2, this superior alloy offers 18% more tensile strength than Giant's other proprietary alloy, ALUXX, used in the Seek 2 and 3. The end result? A frame made of thin-walled tubing that is both light and agile while retaining all the strength and durability of a heavier frame. The bike is sleek, yet robust. It is ideal for pretty much any riding other than racing or off-road use. It has a wide gear range to handle any sort of terrain. Because it has a tough wheel set it can be used over all types of surfaces, whether they be gravel, grass or paved. The bike is also set-up to take a rear rack so that you can load it up if need be. Most people will love the really clean look of the Seek, so may be hesitant to add anything that will detract from the superb lines of the bike.
The brakes are Shimano hydraulic discs, a really responsive set of brakes, perfect if you are commuting or carrying any loads. The confidence that a great set of brakes gives is hard to describe, it is a great feeling knowing that you can stop quickly under any conditions, even in adverse weather conditions. The equipment is Shimano Deore. Shimano designed this for upper recreation, so you can be confident that the gear changing will be precise, with no missed changes, even if you are relatively new to cycling. Simply stated it will make changing gear a breeze.
As with any bike we sell it comes with 12 months free service. This is not a limited sevice, we will do what is required to ensure that you are absolutely satisfied with your new purchase. This is a really lovely bike, best come and have a test ride. |
Giant Roam XR 2 Price was $999, but now is just $849 |
New to the Giant range for 2012 the Roam XR2 is a bike that may well result in other bikes in your fleet being used a little less often.
Not a racer, it doesn't have drop handlebars or skinny tyres but it does have suspension forks and fatter tyres.
But it's not a mountain bike, the tyres aren't that wide and the wheels are 700c. However it's not a hybrid either, or not in the form we've come to recognise as a hybrid over recent years.
But it is a hybrid of sorts. A new style of bike which is a cross between a flat bar road bike and a hybrid, a lighter, faster, sportier hybrid. A fun hybrid.
Just with narrower tyres.
The Roam XR 2 has a super light aluminium alloy frame and is fitted with SR Suntour suspension forks which have a lockout option for when the going is real smoooooth. A great quality drive train based around a 27 speed Shimano Deore gear set will provide years of reliable service even under pretty severe riding conditions. But the Roam is built to be durable. Built to be ridden hard and fast. Built to be the bike that makes it hard for you to decide to take out one of your other bikes instead of it. |

Giant Seek 2 2011 Price was $1099, but now $899 |
The Seek range of bicycles is designed to give you a combination of features most suited to urban riding. The disc brakes give you powerful, controlled braking in all weather conditions. Due to the intelligent frame design such as tucking the rear disc calliper inside the rear triangle of the bike, racks and mudguards may be easily fitted if desired. The tyres are fast-rolling, conserving your energy, and puncture resistant to give you peace of mind. There are reflective decals on the forks and stays to give you extra visibility at night. The wheels feature security skewers to prevent the theft of your wheels when your bike is locked up on the street. With smooth looking

SIZES S, M, L, XL |
Giant Seek 2 2012 Price is $799 |
The Giant Seek 2 is definitely not your run-of-the-mill commuting bike. It is made for city commuting, but still has some mountain bike components to make it stronger and the level of terrain to explore is a higher range than most bikes of this type.
Taking a second to look at the different hazards of city riding compared to that of a mountain biker, for example, we find a few different parts of the bike more important. In the city you have a lot of people/cars/building etc. all packed into smaller spaces, making braking and steering very important features... Giant did keep that in mind when they designed this bike. The bike has disc brakes for smooth, efficient braking, a lightweight frame making it easier to maneuvre and steer, reflective paint making you more visible, a metal guard on the top tube to prevent scratching, puncture-resistant tyres and Giant double wall rims for sturdiness.
Again the riding position is designed with urban commuting and recreational riding in mind. The seating position is efficient, yet sufficiently upright to have good vision at all times. It will not suit you if you have back or neck problem and need an upright position, but if you want to be able to really push hard climbing hills, yet be able to see what the traffic is doing around you, the riding position is ideal.
But to get right down to the nitty-gritty, the bike rides really well, it simply feels great. People who take this baby out on a test ride always come back with a smile on their face. Now, if that doesn't make you jump in your car to come and test ride one, then how about the fact that it's now just $799! |
GT Transeo 2.0 Disc Hybrid Bike 2011. Price was $999, but now just $799!
|
The Gt Transeo 2.0 represents unbeatable value for a high performance hybrid bike, capable of handling not only recreational riding on bike paths, tracks and rail trails, but also negotiating a weekly commute, particularly if the commute incorporates various types of terrain. While having the same basic features as the other Transeo's in the range, such as the Triple Triangle 7000 Series Alloy frame, and sporty yet comfortable suspension, The Transeo 1.0 is truly in a class of its own.
The Shimano Alivio 9speed gearing is incredibly sharp and responsive, as well as having a fantastic wear time, while the Tektro Draco Comp Hydraulic disc brakes offer a stopping power unrivalled by other hybrids in the market, especially under $1000. The wheels are again of high quality, with double wall rims and eyelets preventing spoke pull through and Schwable puncture resistant tyres protecting you from the outside, you are assured hours of riding pleasure without any hassles.
The suspension is equipped with speed lockout ensuring a smooth transition from rigid to shocks, where added efficency or more comfort are only a turn away. The suspension is generous in it's travel, ensuring when engaged you glide seamlessly over rutts and ridges in the surface, ensuring you are as comfortable as possible. Add to this, the class finishing of GT branded accessories and you have a bike that is simply demanding to be ridden. |

XDS RX-580 Flat Bar Road Bike Price was $869, but now just $699 |
Have a look at this bike. It looks great, has a light frame, comfortable saddle, and is equipped with a Shimano Sora 27 speed gear system. It is an absolute bargain!
As a fast commuting bike, or simply for everyday recreational riding, this is surpriisingly versatile. While it has a lightweight aluminium frame to keep the weight down, the forks are carbon fibre, to improve rider comfort by dampening out road vibration, a contributing factor in rider fatigue. The carbon fibre forks improve rider comfort without adding additional weight.
Because it has a Shimano Sora triple crank at the front combined with normal road gearing, it is capable of climbing the steepest of inclines, yet it can reach quite high speeds if you are up to it.
The Shimano R500 wheels are reasonably robust, and certainly much better than you would normally see on a bike below $1,000, much less $700. Combined with the CST 700x28 tyres, the bike rolls well and is quite puncture resistant, certainly a great benefit if you just want to go out for a bit of execise, and dont fancy spending time repairing flat tyres.
The top tube is long enough to place the rider in an efficient riding position, ideal for climbing or moving along at a decent pace, less suitable if you only wish to go out for a leisurely cruise. But if you plan to ride to work or go out for a bit of execise it is perfect. I have a flat bar road bike, and have grown to really like it. Sure it isn't as fast as a normal road bike, but in traffic it inspires confidence. It is so easily handled especially when motorists or pedestrians do unpredictable actions, and you can ride with peace of mind.
A great bike, you will love it. |
2011 GT Traffic 2.0 Flat Bar Road Bike Was $849 now $699 |
The GT Traffic range of bikes targets those who find themselves wanting a bike suited to city riding, but with the strength, durability and comfort of something a little more versatile. Through its lightweight alloy frame and rigid front fork the Traffic 2.0 is a friend to all those with a short to medium distance commute looking for reliability and stability when riding, but with enough speed to ensure a commute doesn't take all day.
The Shimano Alivio gearing is generous but not ridiculous, providing an easy transition up and down the cassette, with a range of gears bound to satisfy nearly all riders. The wheels are identical to those found on the Traffic's off road cousin the GT Transeo, and with double wall rims for strength on the inside, and Schwable puncture resistant tyres on the outside, you can be sure you will spend your time riding your bike not pushing it. The V-brakes ensure a consistent stop everytime, while reducing weight when compared to disc brake options on some other models.
Lastly, in keeping with the urban theme of this bike GT has attached its patented Pinhead system to the bike's front and rear axles, and the seat post, making theft of wheels and seat and distant fear. This is thanks to the unique pattern of the locking mechanisms to each of these parts of the bicycle where only the key provided with the bike is capable of unlocking them (but don't worry replacements are available if they get misplaced!) |
Giant Seek 3 Hybrid Bike 2012
|
Simplicity and economy combine in the Giant Seek 3 to produce a fast, nimble bike at excellent value!
With a full-alloy frame coupled with durable cro-moly forks, Shimano disc brakes and full Shimano drivetrain of 24 gears, the Seek 3 has got to be one of the best value, urban bikes available. And because Giant knew this bike was going to be a hot favourite for cruising around town, they've included anti-theft skewers to ensure your wheels are still on the bike when you return from reclining in that plush suede couch in some dimly lit cafe where you'd been sipping latte. Yeah, this is the bike that's sure to be a popular favourite for the around-town rider who wants to go fast sometimes, slow and leisurely at other times, and knows value when they see it.
Add to this Giant's life-time warranty on the frame, a two year parts warranty from Shimano and our exceptional 12-months of after-sales servicing and you'll be scratching your head wondering why you're still reading this screen and not already jumping in your car to come in and see what the fuss is about! What!? You're still here ... stop reading about it and ride the real thing. |

2010 GT Traffic 2.0 Price was $949, now just $599 |
Designed for city use, the Traffic 2.0 features low maintenance internal hub gears. The hub is a Shimano Nexus 8 speed, which has a wide enough range for almost any city riding unless you happen to find a massive suburban incline. One of the advantages of an internal hub, is the ability to change gears when you are stationary so if you happen to stop at a set of lights and realise you are stuck in a gear too hard to start off again, simply select your desired gear and wait for the green! No problem.

XDS RX-280 Flat Bar Road Bike Price was $699, but now just $599 |
At $599 this bike is a perfect bike for most people wanting a good quality, but relatively low cost flat bar road bike.
XDS is relatively unknown in Australia, but they produce high quality bikes. XDS usually produce bikes that other companies sell under their own name, and some well known names at that.
This bike rides well. It has a lightweight aluminium frame, with Shimano road gearing and a quality Tektro "V" brake system. It has a Shimano triple crank, so that you have a really wide gear range, ideal for any hill you need to tackle. The wide ratios also mean that it has a high top speed if you need it. It is unusual to be able to get a bike with Shimano road cranks, derailleurs and cassette at this price level. It means the bike changes gear smoothly and efficiently, yet can achieve a top speed around 50kmh if you are up to it. Even the crank bearing assembly is a sealed Shimano unit, there is simply no junk on the bike.
The wheels have double wall rims and a reasonable quality 700 x 28 tyre, ideal for roads and bike paths, not too suitable for gravel.
The riding position as with most flat bar road bikes is fairly aggressive, not at all suitable if you wish to sit bolt upright, but if you are happy to lean slightly forward into a more efficient riding position, this bike is great. |
2012 Giant Cypress 1. Now $599 |
2012 Giant Cypress 1 The Giant Cypress range is, without a doubt, our most popular hybrid range. Let me explain why, starting with this bike, the Giant Cypress 1.
Suspension while hill climbing can absorb a lot of your power, so this is a simple way to get the most out of your pedalling up hills. Once at the top of the hill, simple turn the knob again and the suspension will kick in! The drivetrain is Shimano Alivio (a recreational mountain bike gear system) for reliability and handling. And the Alloy V brakes are known for efficiency and reliability.

Giant Roam Hybrid Bike Price $549 |
Hybrid bikes have been a staple of the bike market for many years now, evolving into the fairly staid, comfortable style of bike like the Giant Cypress. Fantastic for many people who's comfort is the main buying criteria. But some people want something a bit sportier, but still with 700c wheels and widish tyres, a bike that is pretty fast but is rugged enough to handle some trails and paths. A cross between a Cypress style hybrid and a Cross City style flat bar road bike. But not one that looks like grandpa's bike.
Such a versatile bike, the Roam rides well on roads and can take curb jump every now and then as well as some slipping and sliding if you push it hard on the cycle paths. Giant have done a really good job selecting the most suitable components, with 700c wheels and tyres that are wide enough with some tread for average trails, but narrow enough for good road speed, the Roam is a bike for both worlds of cycling and with 7 sizes over both a mens and ladies range, the Roam will suit the riding situations and needs of many riders. With 27 speed gearing the Roam really is a go anywhere bike and could also be considered as a pretty good touring option. Not for hardcore mountain trails. Not for racing along Beach Road. But perfect for that in between riding many of us do. Some off road, some on. Some slower riding but also times when speed is required. |
GT Transeo 4.0 Hybrid Bike 2012. Marked down from $579, to just $549!
|
The Gt Transeo is a true all purpose bike. It is light and easy to pedal, yet it can handle gravel tracks with ease. The Transeo 4 has adjustable front suspension, which allows you to adjust it to obtain the ideal comfort level to suit your weight and riding preference. The frame is 6061 hydroformed aluminium, so it is light, yet strong, and the Gt triple triangle frame design means you can be sure the handling will be great.
The gear system is fairly basic, it is Shimano Acera 24 speed, ideal for recreational riding, but not suitable for anything too demanding. The bike is designed for riding along bike paths with occasional off-road forays, and for this the bike will give trouble free riding for years. It is fast enough to use for commuting and general city use, although there are bikes made specifically for this, that would be more suitable.
Overall it is a good looking, extremely versatile bike, and if you were vafter a bike that can be used for any type of riding, it is ideal. |

Giant Transend 1 2012 (medium only) Price was $549, now $499 |
The top of the Transend range for 2012, the Transend 1 is ideal for anyone looking for a lighter recreational commuting bike. It is actually an ideal commuting bike. The frame is lightweight alloy, and the bike is quite fast and easy to push. Dont get me wrong, it is no racer, but compared to the average hybrid bike, it is very fast and easy to push along. The riding position is very relaxed, and while it is not upright, it seems to be great for suburban recreational riding. The straight blade forks give precise steering and are a huge weight saving over the suspension forks generally fitted to a hybrid in the $400-$1000 price range. As the riding position places most of the weight on your bottom, the absence of front suspension is not a problem for most of us.
The Alloy V-brakes provide good, reliable braking and the gears are Shimano Alivio, which give precise, simple gear shifting for most recreational riding. The Transend 1 gives you a wider range of gears to choose from, and just a better quality gear system. The bike actually comes with a Giant Unity saddle (very comfy), alloy fenders & a rack. So it's got the extras many people desire, and these extras would normally cost around $130 for something of this quality! The Transends were designed to be "up there" in the comfort range for 2012, and they have definitely achieved this status. For under $600, you get a comfortable, extremely versatile bike that could be used for any type of riding. Come and test ride one today. |

Melbourne has joined the ranks of sophisticated cities like Paris and London where motor vehicles, public transport and bicycles co-exist as critical transport options. Local bike lanes and paths have now reached a point where more commuter cyclists can relieve pressure on stretched road and public transport systems. For just $599, Giant has met these new priorities with one of their most practical and stylish bikes ever. Young commuter cyclists have started a welcome new trend, reviving old bikes for their comfort, ease of riding and low theft risk. Riding a classic, older bike in everyday clothes has suddenly become chic. Yet as older bikes have become more sought-after, most have become too valuable as an everyday commuter. Giant’s new Transend commuter bike range addresses this by combining classic style and detailing with modern lightweight technology, reliability, and surprisingly little outlay. Before riding the $599 Giant Transend 2, I was expecting a cheap heavy clunker pretending to be an original Malvern Star or Raleigh. Instead, I found myself astride an unexpectedly light and comfortable bike that I would be happy to ride every day. Three longer journeys including Heidelberg to Box Hill and return, Heidelberg to Macleod, Preston, Brunswick and return, Heidelberg to Fairfield, Docklands, Footscray and Kensington and return plus other sundry trips soon added up to at least 300km over a week. Melbourne weather also threw everything it could at both the bike and me yet it didn’t feel like a tough week of riding. Dismissing the Transend as just another hybrid or city bike won’t work when it is neither. The Transend 3 has the same lightweight frame and all the comfort of the Transend 2, the only difference is that it has a cheaper gear system. That does not mean less reliable, it simply will not change as smoothly as the more expensive system.
Its 700X35C tyres are fatter than a hybrid’s. Its longer wheelbase adds extra luggage space behind the rider while spreading weight and generating amazing low speed stability. The upright riding position makes it easier to scan what’s ahead and behind. Because it won’t stretch your good street clothes, it can be a lycra-free zone. The Transend also has quality front and rear mudguards that actually work. A substantial luggage rack offers slots for basic panniers and a flat platform that will support a large basket or other bulky cargo. A three-strap bungee attachment system is also provided although care is needed while clipping or unclipping it. So what’s it really like to ride? Different, if you are coming from a road bike or hybrid. |

The tough double-butted chromoly frame tubing means you don’t have to pamper it, and clever features like the subtle U-lock holder and bolted wheels (no quick release) show off Via’s street smarts.
